  • 30 LED diodes and 21 laser diodes for effective treatment
  • FDA-cleared for both men and women
  • Positive results from multiple studies done on hair loss

8.5/10

What is iGrow?

iGrow is a hair regrowth rejuvenation system that utilizes the technology called Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT). This technology uses the LED or Lasers for the light energy.

Unlike other devices which only use either the LED or Laser lights, iGrow is a combination of 30 LED lights and 21 laser diodes at wavelengths of 650-670nm.

Why use both?

iGrow claims that the laser can stimulate hair follicle cells and that the LED would be able to cover a wider range of the scalp. Both these lights would benefit people suffering from androgenetic alopecia.

It is FDA-cleared for both men and women.

First looks: If you were to ask our honest opinions, this thing looks ugly.

However, if it works, and you're just going to use it at home, then it does not matter at all.

About the Company

The company behind this laser helmet is Apira Science, founded in 2004.

Its mission is to provide all with effective, easy-to-use and convenient LLLT systems for individuals suffering from hair and skin related issues.

How well-known is this?

The iGrow is well-published in multiple publications like MensHealth and CNET.

In the Doctor's Show, an user of iGrow shared with the hosts that she had baby hairs growing after 4 months of constant use. She also showed before and after pictures. You can watch the video below:

How does iGrow Work?

iGrow claims that the exact reason on how it works are still not known, but recent research has shown that with the right wavelength of light, the scalp can be penetrated to reach the hair follicles. In doing so, it can trigger cellular activity which in turns makes hair growth more efficient.

Does iGrow Work?

In determining whether iGrow works, we look at two areas - clinical trials and customers' reviews.

Clinical Trials

Clinical studies were done on both men and women.

For Men

The particular clinical study research, "The growth of human scalp hair mediated by visible red light laser and LED sources in males", was awarded the Best Overall Experimental and Translational Research Award at the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery Conference in 2013.

Summary: 41 male participants ranging from age 18-48 completed the study over 16 weeks. Of these participants, 19 used a placebo and 22 were allocated TOPHAT655. This 'hat' was just another name for the iGrow system.

The iGrow system had 21, 5 mW lasers (655 ± 5 nm), and 30 LEDS (655 ± 20 nm).

The participants were treated at home every other day for a total of 60 treatments with treatment sessions lasting only 25 minutes.

Baseline hair counts and post-treatment hair counts were recorded.

What were the results?

There was a 35% increase in hair growth and no side effects or adverse events.

For Women

In the study conducted in "The growth of human scalp hair in females using visible red light laser and LED sources."

42 female completed the study ranging from 18-60 years old over a 16 weeks period. 18 participants used the placebo and 24 used iGrow. Like the males, the system, number of treatments and session length used were identical.

Results?

There was a 37% increase in hair growth with the use of iGrow over the placebo group with no reports of side effects or adverse events. These results were pretty similar to the studies conducted on males.

Customer Reviews

This is one customer review. He describes his experience with the iGrow helmet. He also shows results with before and after pictures, after 6 months of use.

But he does not just use iGrow.

He mentioned about taking 10,000 mcg Biotin supplements as well as Saw Palmetto. So, relying on just 1 solution may not help you get the desired results, but a combination of different options could do some help.

You can watch the video below:

Is It Safe?

Safety is a major factor.

As mentioned in the research, there were no reports of side effects.

However, there should be some precautions that users should take.

Nursing mothers or pregnant women should always contact their doctors before starting any form of regime.

Can you use it after a hair transplant?

Well, there are mixed recommendations. You should ask your surgeon first. Generally, direct contact with an external product after a hair transplant could aggravate the skin. However, with iGrow, there's the 3cm space between the helmet and scalp, so that helps create space, but only at the top of the scalp.

The device can only be turned on when its placed on a head. So you don't have to worry that it burns out when not in use.

The Bad

So far, all looks promising, but there are definitely considerations that you need to make.

Firstly, if you're suffering from severe hair loss, then this may not be useful to you.

Why?

The hair restoration system needs viable hair follicles to work. If you're completely smooth at the top, then we've got bad news for you.

The cost could also be a deterrent. Compared to most LLLT devices, it's priced at a mid-tier to the top-tier range.

How Should I Use It?

It should be used 2-3 times a week or on alternate days.

In 12-16 weeks, you should be able to see some form of results. Optimal results are seen within 24 weeks or 6 months. After the initial period of 4-6 months, you could use it as maintenance for just once or twice per week.

Final Verdict

Overall, although LLLT has been around for quite some time, devices such as the iGrow are relatively new. This pales in comparison with well-known hair growth products like Rogaine and Propecia, along with the rest of the entourage.

Research has shown promising results but at the same time, due to the unpredictable nature of hair loss, it may not work for all.

If you've tried various solutions, and considering getting the iGrow. One thing we always advocate is this: Do it as fast as possible and within your means - time is not on your side. The probability of hair loss worsening increases with time.

If your budget permits, why not give iGrow a try to get fuller hair?
